This glossary of forced induction related terms was created to help the DucCutters users better understand the world of forced induction. We want to make the glossary as useable to everyone as possible. Feel free to send us additions, correction and so on to Bill Johnson at azbill@DucCutters.com.

PARAFFINS
Chemicals (alkanes)-including octane, isooctane, butane, pentane-used in the formulation of gasoline.

PEAK PRESSURE POINT
The point in the stroke of a piston moving within an internal combustion engine at which the greatest level of combustion pressure is realized.

PLAIN BEARING
Non-roller, non-ball bearing; requires high pressure oil for lubrication.

PLENUM CHAMBER
A large capacity intake manifold that usually supplies pressurized air, or air and fuel to the engine.

POP-OFF VALVE
Used to relieve pressure spikes in a intake system. Usually attaches to a plenum chamber.

POWER BOOSTING
A term used to describe turbocharging, supercharging, or nitrous oxide injection.

PRE-IGNITION
Ignition of air and fuel before the intended (proper) ignition timing occurs. It is usually caused by hot spots on the piston or combustion chamber.

PRESSURE DROP
A loss of pressure in a flowing gas or liquid due to restrictions in its path.

PRESSURE RATIO
Used in detemiining proper turbocharger or supercharger size and efficiency. The results of a formula used in deciding what compressor housing to use in a particular turbo installation.

PRESSURE REGULATOR
See regulator, deadhead-type pressure or regulator bypass-type pressure
