This glossary of forced induction related terms was created to help the DucCutters users better understand the world of forced induction. We want to make the glossary as useable to everyone as possible. Feel free to send us additions, correction and so on to Bill Johnson at azbill@DucCutters.com.

A/R RATIO
A calculation to determine the size of a turbocharger exhaust turbine scroll. Defined as the ratio of the area of the incoming gas opening in the scroll, divided by the radius from the center of the shaft to the center of the opening. Indicates ability to flow a certain amount of exhaust. Small A/R ratios allow less exhaust to flow through, but at a higher speed.

AESTHETICS
How something looks; eye appeal.

AFTERRNARKET
parts Parts made by companies other than the original manufacturer of the equipment for which the parts are intended.

AIR DENSITY
Density is the ratio of the mass of an object to its volume, in this case, air. Generally speaking, higher altitude and/or hotter air will result in lower air density.

AIR PRIORITY VALVE
Attaches to blow-through intake plenum chambers to allow the engine to breathe normal air until positive boost is realized.

AIR VELOCITY
How fast air is moving. Usually mentioned in relation to the flow through carburetor venturis or fuel injection throttle bodies.

AIR/FUEL RATIO
So many parts of air to so many parts of fuel, by weight. 14.7 to I would mean there are 14.7 parts of air to I part of fuel by weight.

AMBIENT
Surrounding; as in ambient temperature.

AROMATICS
A combination of molecules from chemicals that make up gasoline.

ASPIRATION
Breathing, as in air.
